With HABA’s Farm Friends threading game, children string together colourful wooden beads and farm figures, from a cow, sheep and rooster to a tractor and carrot. Lacing activities are excellent practice for fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, while encouraging both hands to work together.

What we especially love about this HABA set, however, is that it goes beyond simple threading. Six double-sided template cards turn the activity into a visual matching and sequencing challenge. Children observe the pattern, identify the right pieces, notice their order and then recreate the sequence on the string. Three difficulty levels allow them to progress from simpler arrangements to more challenging ones.

Following the templates develops pattern recognition, visual perception, concentration and working memory, while introducing the idea of what comes first, next and last. Recognising and reproducing patterns and sequences also builds useful foundations for early mathematical thinking.

And when children have had enough of following patterns, they can simply pick their favourite pieces and thread combinations of their own.
