    Original rules:

Shut the box is a game of luck and strategy. The object of the game is to flip over as many numbers as possible or all the numbers on the board. The player who manages to flip over all the numbers is the winner. If any numbers remain open, they are added up and the player with the lowest total or score is the winner. With this double version you can play taking turns, or to make it even more fun you can play simultaneously (using all four dice: a pair each).

    1. Start the game with all tiles in an open position, showing the numerals from 1 to 9.
    2. The younger player starts with rolling both dice. The numbers rolled on on the two dice are added and the first number(s) can be flipped in a way that the sum of them have to be equal to the sum of the rolled numbers. So if, for example, you roll a 3 and a 6, you have five different possibilities to flip numbers:
      • 9 can be flipped over
      • 8 and 1 can be flipped over
      • 7 and 2 can be flipped over
      • 6 and 3 can be flipped over
      • 5 and 4 can be flipped over
    3. The player continues to throw the dice until either all the numbers have been flipped over or he cannot flip any more numbers. If the player cannot flip any more numbers, the remaining, visible numbers are added together to make the final score of the round. For example, if the numbers 2, 3, and 5 are still open when the player throws a one, the player’s score is 10. Play then passes to the next player.
    4. After every player has taken a turn, the player with the lowest score wins. To continue with the game the boards can be returned to a starting position and the next round can begin.

Ideas to play with a younger child:

With younger children who are just learning basic sums you can make up your own rules and play an easier version first. First you can play with rolling the dices and shut the numerals which correspond to the exact pips or to the sum of them. You can take turns after each roll and see who manages to shut all the numbers first.
