Hammering is one of those activities toddlers are naturally drawn to: a simple action, an immediate result, and plenty of reason to do it all over again.

The PlanToys Hammering Bucket gives this urge a clear purpose. Children use the wooden hammer to push the red and blue pegs through the openings in the lid, practising grip control, hand-eye coordination, precision and the controlled movement of the arm and wrist. Working out how much force is needed also gives them immediate feedback about their own movements.
Once hammered through, the pegs disappear inside the bucket. Children can lift the lid, find them again and start over, turning the activity into an early exploration of object permanence, cause and effect and simple problem-solving.

And the bucket itself gives this toy a life beyond its original activity. Toddlers are often deeply interested in filling, emptying, collecting, carrying and transporting objects from one place to another. These repeated actions are part of schema play, and a simple bucket with a handle can become a useful open-ended material in its own right. Remove the hammering lid and it is ready for blocks, little animals, natural treasures or whatever needs collecting and transporting that day.
