Gears are a wonderfully visual way for children to discover how movement can travel from one object to another. Turn one, and suddenly an entire chain begins to move.

The PlanToys Gears Playset includes a wooden base and nine colourful gears that children can position on the pegs in different arrangements. Once the gears connect, turning the driving gear sets the others in motion, making cause and effect immediately visible. Children can experiment with different layouts and observe how changing the position of one gear affects the whole system.

As they build and rebuild their arrangements, children begin to explore some of the basic principles behind simple machines: connected movement, direction and rotation. They can observe that neighbouring gears turn in opposite directions and investigate what happens when they create longer chains. There is no need to explain the mechanics first; the relationships become visible through experimentation.

Positioning the gears on the board and turning them also develops fine motor control and hand-eye coordination, while working out why a particular arrangement does or does not move encourages logical thinking, concentration and problem-solving.
