Geometric shapes are a wonderfully simple starting point for experimenting with patterns, pictures and constructions, and there is no single way they need to be used.

This PlanToys set includes 45 colourful wooden pieces in a variety of geometric shapes and sizes. Children can combine them to create repeating patterns and symmetrical designs, explore how smaller shapes fit together to form larger ones, or arrange them into pictures of houses, animals, people and anything else they imagine. Along the way, they become familiar with shape, size, colour and spatial relationships while developing fine motor control and hand-eye coordination.

Because the pieces are open-ended, unstructured loose parts, their possibilities go far beyond pattern making. They can become building materials, play food, roads, decorations, objects in small-world play or whatever a child needs them to be. They are also useful for sorting, counting, sequencing and exploring simple mathematical concepts, making the set a versatile material for both imaginative play and learning activities.

The four compartments inside the wooden box add another opportunity for sorting and classification. Children can organise the pieces by colour, shape, size or according to a system of their own, then pack everything neatly back into the box when they are finished.
